Plain-language definitions for every term used across this site. Bookmark this if the counselling and reservation vocabulary gets confusing.
All terms
KEA
Karnataka Examinations Authority: the state government body that conducts KCET, PGCET, DCET and some other entrance and recruitment exams in Karnataka.
PUC
Pre-University Course: Karnataka's name for the two-year Class 11–12 stage. "2nd PUC" is equivalent to Class 12.
VTU
Visvesvaraya Technological University: the affiliating university for most engineering colleges in Karnataka.
Rank
A candidate's overall merit position after KCET/PGCET/DCET, calculated from their score. Rank, not raw marks, is what's used in counselling.
Rank card
The official document showing a candidate's overall and category-wise rank, released after the result.
Cutoff
The rank of the last candidate allotted a seat in a specific college, course, category and round. It changes every year and every round based on demand and seat availability.
Choice filling
The counselling step where a candidate lists colleges and courses in order of genuine preference. The allotment system works top-down through this list.
Seat allotment
The automated process that matches candidates to seats based on rank, category, seat availability and choice order, run once per counselling round.
Seat matrix
The full breakdown of how many seats a college has in each course, split by reservation category, for a given year.
Mop-up / special round
A late counselling round used to fill any seats still vacant after the regular rounds, sometimes with relaxed eligibility for specific categories.
GM
General Merit: the unreserved candidate category, generally with the tightest cutoffs.
2A, 2B, 3A, 3B
Karnataka's Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation categories, each with its own defined community list and cutoff.
Category-1
Karnataka's reservation category for the most backward classes, generally with the widest relaxation from GM cutoffs.
SC / ST
Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe: constitutionally defined reservation categories with dedicated seat quotas.
371(J)
Article 371(J) of the Constitution: provides a special reservation quota for candidates from the Hyderabad-Karnataka (Kalyana-Karnataka) region.
Horanadu Kannadiga
A candidature category (Clause M) for candidates whose mother tongue is Kannada, Tulu, or Kodava, residing in other Indian states outside Karnataka. Requires qualifying the KEA Kannada language test.
Gadinadu Kannadiga
A candidature category (Clause N) for candidates whose mother tongue is Kannada, Tulu, or Kodava, residing in notified border regions/districts adjoining Karnataka (such as Kasaragod, Solapur, Sangli, Hosur). Requires qualifying the KEA Kannada language test.
SNQ (Supernumerary Quota)
AICTE-mandated quota offering 5% extra seats in every college branch with 100% tuition fee waiver for candidates whose annual family income is under ₹8.00 Lakhs.
Domicile / local candidate
A candidate who qualifies as a "Karnataka candidate" for state-quota purposes, typically through years of study in Karnataka or a parent's domicile or government employment in the state.
Admit card / hall ticket
The document required for exam-day entry, downloaded from the official portal ahead of the exam.
Provisional answer key
The initial answer key released after the exam, open to candidate objections before a final key is published.
NEET-UG
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test: India's single qualifying exam for MBBS and BDS admission nationwide, used alongside KEA's counselling for Karnataka's state-quota medical/dental seats.
Lateral entry
Direct admission into the second year of an engineering degree (rather than the first year), available to diploma holders via DCET.
AICTE
All India Council for Technical Education: the national regulatory body that approves technical education institutions and programmes across India.
NAAC
National Assessment and Accreditation Council: assigns an institution-wide accreditation grade (like A++ or A+) based on an independent quality review.
NBA
National Board of Accreditation: accredits individual academic programmes (e.g. a specific college's CSE or ECE department), separately from NAAC's whole-institution grade.
NIRF
National Institutional Ranking Framework: the Indian government's official annual ranking of institutions, based on a published methodology covering teaching resources, research, graduation outcomes, outreach and perception.
Autonomous college
A college that designs its own curriculum and runs its own internal exams while still being affiliated to a parent university (usually VTU) for the final degree.
Deemed / autonomous university
An institution that has moved a step beyond college-level autonomy to become its own independent degree-granting university, no longer affiliated to VTU or another parent university at all.
COMEDK
Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka: a separate, private entrance exam (COMEDK UGET) many of the same Karnataka colleges also accept, alongside but independent of KCET.
GATE
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering: a national exam that's the standard route into M.Tech at IITs/NITs, and also feeds a separate GATE-quota seat pool at some Karnataka colleges alongside PGCET.
DTE
Directorate of Technical Education, Karnataka: the state department overseeing technical education institutions, including the official list of recognised polytechnics and engineering colleges.
Management quota
Seats a private college fills at its own discretion (not through KEA's centralised KCET/PGCET/DCET counselling), typically at a higher, non-government-regulated fee.
Mock allotment
A preview run of the seat allotment algorithm using candidates' current choice lists, published before the real allotment so candidates can revise their choices with real data.
Information bulletin
KEA's official yearly document for each exam, spelling out exact eligibility, fees, syllabus and procedure for that specific cycle — the authoritative source over any third-party summary.
Caste certificate
Proof of reservation category, issued by a competent authority. Unlike an income certificate, it doesn't expire — it stays valid until formally cancelled.
Income certificate
Proof of family income, used for category-based fee concessions and reservation eligibility. Valid for 5 years from its issue date; an expired one is generally not accepted at document verification, so renew it before applying if it's close to that mark.
Verification slip
Issued after document verification, containing a unique security key and login credentials. Mandatory to access choice filling — without it, you cannot enter the option-entry portal at all.
