Why DCET cutoffs look nothing like KCET's, at the very same college

Published 5 August 2026

If you’re a diploma holder looking at DCET lateral-entry cutoffs next to KCET’s first-year cutoffs at the same college, the gap looks almost too big to be real. At RV College of Engineering’s 2025 cycle, reported DCET lateral-entry closing ranks for Computer Engineering and AI & Machine Learning were 21 and 42. KCET’s first-year CSE closing rank at the same college that year was in the low hundreds. Both numbers are real. They’re just not measuring the same competition.

Why the numbers aren’t comparable

Pool size is completely different. KCET’s applicant pool numbers in the lakhs, competing for the full four-year first-year intake across 200+ colleges. DCET’s applicant pool is limited to diploma holders statewide seeking lateral entry into the smaller number of second-year seats each college sets aside — nationally and even state-wide, a far smaller candidate pool chasing a smaller, separate seat count. See DCET’s own cutoff page for the fuller reported figures.

“Rank 21” means something different when the pool is smaller. A DCET rank of 21 reflects being 21st out of a few thousand lateral-entry applicants statewide, not 21st out of the roughly 3 lakh who sit KCET. Comparing the raw rank number across the two exams without accounting for pool size will mislead you every time.

Seats and branches don’t map 1:1. DCET lateral entry lands you directly in the second year, in a branch you choose independently of your diploma stream (see DCET eligibility), competing only against other lateral-entry applicants for that specific, smaller seat pool — not against the entire first-year KCET cohort for the same branch.

What this means for your choices

If you’re a diploma holder deciding whether DCET is “worth it” compared to starting over via KCET, don’t use the two cutoff numbers to judge relative difficulty. Instead:
