DCET eligibility criteria

DCET eligibility rests on three things: a recognised diploma, a minimum aggregate percentage, and Karnataka residency.

Academic qualification

A diploma (or a recognised equivalent) from an institution recognised by the Karnataka State Board of Technical Education or an equivalent body.
For B.E./B.Tech lateral entry: minimum 45% aggregate marks combined across the 5th and 6th semesters of the diploma, relaxed to 40% for SC, ST and OBC Karnataka candidates.

B.Arch lateral entry works differently: it isn't gotten via a DCET rank. Diploma in Architecture holders need a valid NATA score (Council of Architecture, minimum 40%) as the actual qualifying exam, plus 50% aggregate in the diploma's final year. You still register for DCET and pay the application fee as a procedural step, but NATA — not your DCET performance — is what determines eligibility and merit for the architecture seat.

Where diploma education happens

Karnataka runs government polytechnics in most district headquarters — reported examples include Mysuru, Hubballi, Belagavi, Tumakuru, Hassan, Shivamogga, Kalaburagi, Raichur, and Ballari — typically charging in the roughly ₹5,000–15,000 a year range, alongside a larger number of private polytechnics statewide. Any diploma from an institution recognised by the Karnataka State Board of Technical Education (or an equivalent recognised body) counts toward DCET eligibility, regardless of which specific polytechnic you attended.

Residency

DCET admission is limited to candidates who qualify as Karnataka candidates — only Karnataka residents are eligible to sit the exam, unlike KCET and PGCET, which both admit a smaller pool of outside-Karnataka candidates under separate rules.

Branch choice at lateral entry

You are not restricted to continuing in the same branch as your diploma. Once admitted, you can choose any engineering branch offered at your target college, subject to seat availability and your rank in that counselling round.
