Who is DCET for?
Diploma holders (or those completing a diploma) from a recognised polytechnic who want to enter directly into the second year of a B.E./B.Tech degree, instead of starting an undergraduate degree from scratch. (Diploma-in-Architecture holders can enter B.Arch first year too, but that route actually qualifies through NATA, not a DCET rank — DCET registration is still required as a procedural step.)
Is there negative marking in DCET?
No. Each question carries equal weight toward the 100-mark total, with no deduction for wrong or unattempted answers.
Does the DCET syllabus depend on my diploma branch?
No. Unlike KCET, DCET's syllabus (Engineering Mathematics, Basic Sciences, IT skills, Electrical/Electronics fundamentals, and Engineering/Project Management) is common to every diploma branch.
Can I change branches through DCET lateral entry?
Yes. Branch choice is open at lateral entry — you can choose any engineering branch offered at your target college, subject to seat availability and your rank in that round, regardless of your diploma branch.
Can candidates from outside Karnataka apply for DCET?
No. Unlike KCET and PGCET, DCET admission is limited to candidates who qualify as Karnataka residents.
How many DCET seats are there each year?
DCET 2026 offered more than 17,000 lateral entry seats across government, aided and private engineering colleges statewide.
Where do I check the current, official DCET dates?
The official KEA CET counselling portal is cetonline.karnataka.gov.in/kea. This site links to the current portal throughout rather than restating notification content.
Why are DCET cutoff ranks so much lower (tighter) than KCET cutoff ranks at the same college?
Because DCET's applicant pool (diploma holders seeking lateral entry) is far smaller than KCET's lakhs-strong first-year applicant pool. A DCET rank of 21 at RVCE Computer Engineering (2025) reflects being 21st among a few thousand lateral-entry applicants statewide, not 21st among KCET's ~3 lakh candidates — the numbers aren't directly comparable. Do I lose a year by taking DCET instead of just doing KCET as a fresh candidate?
No — that's the point of lateral entry. DCET admits you directly into the second year, so compared to starting a fresh four-year KCET-route degree, you save a year rather than losing one.
Can I do DCET if my diploma is from outside Karnataka?
No. Unlike KCET and PGCET, DCET admission is restricted to candidates who qualify as Karnataka residents, regardless of where the diploma institution is located.
